Punchkick Interactive has officially been approved by Apple to become part of the Apple iPhone Developer Program, and we are curious as to the number of other developers who were also approved—so, we decided to start a tally.

If you have been approved by Apple to participate in the iPhone Developer Program, then leave a comment. We will update the tally here daily.

As a bit of background, U.S. applicants rejected received an e-mail stating: “Dear Registered iPhone Developer, Thank you for expressing interest in the iPhone Developer Program. We have received your enrollment request. As this time, the iPhone Developer Program is available to a limited number of developers and we plan to expand during the beta period. We will contact you again regarding your enrollment status at the appropriate time. Thank you for applying.”

Applicants outside the United States received an e-mail stating: “Dear Registered iPhone Developer, Thank you for expressing interest in the iPhone Developer Program. We have received your enrollment request. At this time, the iPhone Developer Program is only available in the US and will expand to other countries during the beta period. CS3 Device Profile Update #5 Available for Download

Mark reports that Device Profile #5 is now available for download. This update features the first Flash Lite 3.0 devices available in the market.

An important note: before downloading Update #5, you must first download and install the Flash Lite 3 Update for Device Central CS3 and for Flash CS3 Professional (2 separate updates).

584 Flash Capable Windows Mobile Devices in World’s Largest PDA Database

I stumbled across the self-proclaimed “World’s Largest PDA Database,” and as soon as I did I thought, “I can finally get a tally of how many Windows Mobile 2002, 2003 or 5.0 devices are on the market!” In total I found 584 devices. Unfortunately, however, there is no data on the penetration of these devices.

Why is this important? Adobe offers installers for Flash Lite 2.1 for Windows Mobile 5.0, Flash Player 7 for Pocket PC 2003, and the Flash Player 6 for Windows Mobile 2002. Although this does not have the mass market appeal of Verizon Wireless, it is certainly notable.

Google PageRank Algorithm Possibly Updated

I am not 100% sure on this one, but I think that Google may have updated it’s PageRank Algorithm. Today I noticed that our site’s PageRank was lowered, so I started to check some other sites. After some digging it seems to be somewhat across the board. Our sites root, http://www.punchkickinteractive.com, dropped from a PR6 to a PR3. http://www.punchkickinteractive.com/blog/ dropped from a PR7 to a PR4. http://www.wikipedia.org/ dropped from a PR9 to a PR8. http://www.google.com and http://www.adobe.com/, however, are still PR10.

If anyone else is has noticed a similar PageRank pattern, please post a comment about it.

Open Mouth, Insert Foot

Every once in a while—perhaps as often as the solar equinox or emergence of the breeding cicadas—I open my mouth and say something I later regret. And when I do so, I feel it is my duty to own up to my mistake. So, with my sneaker on my plate, I apologize to all of you about my July 5th rant, Why a True Apple Fan Would Never Buy an iPhone.

Why, you ask? Allow me to explain.

I decided that I needed a smart phone with true email capabilities about two months ago. Looking around at the options out there, I wasn’t particularly blown away by any of the smart phones I played around with at the Verizon store. On second look, the iPhone started to seem like a phone I could (*ahem) learn to live with.

Fast forward two months.

My iPhone and I are best friends, and in some countries, possibly married. I absolutely cannot live without it. The email software is incredible and syncs perfectly with my .Mac account and IMAP business account. The camera is beautiful and I find myself constantly taking pictures with my phone—something I’ve never done in the 11+ years I’ve been a cell phone user. I use the iPhone religiously for iPod purposes, and my video podcasts have never looked better. And the Safari browser has proven to be a mid-argument-dispute-resolution miracle on more than one occasion.

Sure, the iPhone has some problems. Edge isn’t too quick, and 8 gigs just isn’t enough memory. But the goods FAR outweigh the bad. Software updates have even fixed a number of the issues I once complained about. Reading through my previous post, I’ve had to ask myself: Am I so jaded that a technical marvel like the iPhone can elicit a complaint from me?

Mr. Jobs, if you’re reading this, please accept my apology. Please continue to deliver me gadgets like the iPhone. And please forgive us tech-geeks when we are overly critical. We don’t mean it.

Apple “shrinks” the size of the iPhone (using a big-handed model)

Did Apple shrink the iPhone just days before its release? No—but it certainly looks like they tried to. boingboing.net noticed that Apple has changed the size of the hand that holds the iPhone in their ads. With a quick comparison of the official Apple photos, you will see what all the fuss is about.

My view has always been that the iPhone is a bit on the large side. Sure, as a true PDA replacement the size is not so bad. But a replacement for my compact RAZR, no. Perhaps if they started with the bigger hand in the first place I could have been convinced. For now, it is still huge.

This mobile marketing blog, Punchkick Interactive, is now available for download on EyeMags.com. I assume that most people reading this know what EyeMags.com is, but for those of you who don’t I’ll offer a brief description.

EyeMags is essentially a service that streamlines mobile blogging. With a simple download you can receive updated streams of any blog, or “mobile magazine” as they EyeMags would put it. The service does a pretty great job of presenting this content on a mobile device.

Device profile update #1 for Adobe Device Central CS3 released

Bill recently announced that Adobe has made the first device profile update for Adobe Device Central CS3 avaiable.

There are 3 ways you can download the update (11.4MB):
- go to the direct URL in your browser from our new site, Adobe Device Central Online
- in the Device Central start window click the “device updates” button
- in the Device Central menu bar select Help > Updates…

This update contains 39 new device profiles from all regions of the world, many released between January to April 2007, as well as updates to 7 existing profiles. With this update you will have access to 265 device profiles as part of Device Central with most of them for supporting Flash Lite content in addition to other mobile media types.

Adobe CS3: CliffsNotes of New Features

It’s very exciting that the (INTEL NATIVE!) CS3 has been released. This is meant to highlight the major new features. Mainly, integration, integration, integration. I will be updating this as the presentation from Adobe goes on.

Photoshop Extended

Flash Video integrated.

Import Video frames to layers.

Stack Mode blends changes in pixels between frames of video.

Color Widget built using Apollo.

Dreamweaver

GUI AJAX Integration. Dreamweaver CS3 has GUI widgets that you can drag and drop onto your Web design. XML controlled data.

Check browser compatibility tool shows coding problems before they start. Dreamweaver checks for problems with every major Web browser.

CSS Advisor is a new, community run Web site within Adobe.com.

Illustrator

Illustrator integrates seamlessly with Flash and now includes some of the Flash-style editing tools.

Live Color.

Flash

File::Import:: — Dialog Box looks to the layers of Photoshop and Illustrator files and automatically creates movie clips and dynamic text boxes based on the layers you choose. VERY EASY .ILL and .PSD integration.

You can now save “styles” for your animations. This allows you to copy motion tweens as Action Script 3.0. Then-you can paste the Action Script somewhere else and duplicate the animations.

Video Production

Now you can import SWFs into After Effects CS3! The animation is retained! It’s about time.

AMG! Now you can import Photoshop’s vanishing points and animate a 3D model of a still image in After Effects CS3.

Puppet Tool: Lets you take a still image and it lets you create organic character animations. AMG! You must see the demo of this. It is amazing.

Dynamic Link Feature: On the Mac, bring After Effects CS3 compositions and dynamically link them into Premere Pro CS3. Then, edit the original file back in After Effects with no need to render.

Time Remapping is premere pro feature that lets you add variable speed time changes on video content. This means, you can go from normal speed, to slow-mo, to high speed, all within the Premere Pro CS timeline.
